Flower School: How to Ikebana. The Japanese art form of Flower Arranging

With hectic schedules and endless to do lists, the feeling of calm has become ever more elusive in our daily lives. Whilst its tempting to reach for that well deserved glass of wine at the end of a busy day, a recent study highlighted that getting in the flow of a creative task has been shown to significantly reduce stress and boost your mood. Whether drawing, knitting, writing or painting is your vibe, all these creative activities help to focus the mind and have similar calming effects on the body to those achieved through meditation.

For us, we adore the minimal and delicate aesthetic of our Ikebana Kits, and they provide the perfect opportunity to take time out to be creative. Collaborating with British potter Paper Thin Moon, we created a perfect little flower frog, allowing you to artfully position slender stems and branches to create a stunning refined arrangement. As our preserved and naturally dried real flowers will stay fresh all year, our kits allow to you make new arrangements time and time again with extra stems provided.

Step One

Position your flower frog on a clear surface such as a table or desk and gather your supplies. You will need a pair of sharp scissors or secateurs.

Select which stems you would like to use in your arrangement. There will be plenty of stems left for your next creation!

Step Two

Taking your time, select the taller stems first and add these to your design.

It is important to work with the natural shape and fall of your stems and keep things minimal.

Step Three

Now it’s time to add the shorter stems, low cascading grasses, fluffy pampas or feathers.

Top tip: Play around with height by trimming certain stems to create depth and interest.
